Overview
Return of Reckoning (RoR) is a revival of the massively multiplayer online RPG Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, developed by Mythic Entertainment and shut down by publisher Electronic Arts in December 2013. Today Return of Reckoning is the only active project where you can experience the original Warhammer Online gameplay.
The project recreates the original game as faithfully as possible, preserving all of its core systems: Realm vs Realm (RvR), 24 careers, the campaign for territory control, and fortress sieges. At the same time the dev team applies balance changes, fixes long-standing bugs, and adds content that Mythic Entertainment never finished before the shutdown.
History
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning launched in September 2008 from Mythic Entertainment (an EA studio) as an MMORPG set in the Warhammer Fantasy universe. It drew roughly 800,000 subscribers at launch, but quickly bled players due to technical problems, class imbalance, and competition with World of Warcraft. By 2013 the active population had fallen to the point where keeping the game running was no longer viable, and EA closed the servers on 18 December 2013.
Almost immediately, enthusiasts began work on recreating the game. Return of Reckoning was founded in 2014 by a group of volunteer developers building on a server-side emulator. The early years were spent stabilizing the server core, fixing critical bugs, and restoring game content. By 2016-2017 the project reached a level of stability that attracted a sizable player base.
Since then the RoR team has shipped regular updates: balance patches, restored PvE content (including fortresses and city instances), and original additions meant to solve problems Mythic Entertainment never got to. As of 2026 the project is mature and runs stably, with a dedicated community.
Gameplay
Return of Reckoning is built entirely on the original Warhammer Online and revolves around the conflict between two factions โ Order and Destruction. Each faction has three races with four unique careers, for 24 playable careers in total. Careers fall into archetypes โ tank, melee DPS, ranged DPS, and healer โ but each has its own mechanics rooted in Warhammer Fantasy lore.
The central activity is RvR โ large-scale faction PvP for territory control. The system has several layers: open RvR in zones with Battlefield Objectives, Scenarios (instanced PvP matches for groups), and the climactic fortress and city sieges.
PvE content includes quest chains, Public Quests โ multi-stage open-world events where players cooperate without forming a group โ and dungeons of varying difficulty. The Public Quest system was groundbreaking when the original launched and influenced the design of many later MMORPGs.
Characters level along two parallel tracks: PvE level (up to 40) and Renown Rank (up to 100), earned through RvR. Renown Rank unlocks gear and abilities that strengthen your character in PvP. The Tactics and Morale ability systems let you tailor your build to a specific playstyle.
Features
The defining feature of Return of Reckoning is the complete absence of monetization. There is no cash shop, no premium currency, and no paid advantages of any kind. Every player is on equal footing โ crucial for a PvP-focused game. The project survives on voluntary donations and the dev team's enthusiasm.
The RoR team has implemented a large amount of content that never shipped in the original game. This includes reworked Fortress Sieges, the final city instances, and a range of balance changes aimed at long-standing issues. New events and mechanics were also added to encourage active participation in the RvR campaign.
The territory-control campaign is a layered system: factions compete over zones across four tiers, and winning the highest tiers opens the door to sieging an enemy city. City sieges are the climax of the RvR campaign and pull in hundreds of players at once.
The unique Tome of Knowledge tracks every player achievement โ from killing specific monsters to exploring zones โ and rewards them with tactics, titles, and cosmetic items. The system encourages world exploration and varied play.
Community
The Return of Reckoning community is predominantly English-speaking, with a strong European and North American presence. The main hubs are the official forum and the project's Discord server, which has tens of thousands of members. The average population is 1,000-3,000 players depending on the time of day, peaking during EU prime time.
The community is actively involved in the project's development: players test updates, report bugs, debate class balance, and propose changes. The dev team publishes regular progress reports and roadmaps, keeping development transparent.
New players have detailed guides and a knowledge base on the project's wiki portal. The community is generally welcoming to newcomers, though RvR is highly competitive, and unorganized groups fall well short of coordinated warbands (a warband is a group of up to 24 players).
