Overview
Mortal Online 2 is a hardcore sandbox MMORPG from the Swedish studio Star Vault, released in January 2022. It is the sequel to Mortal Online (2010) and delivers a fully open, first-person world built on full loot, free-form PvP and a deep crafting system. Mortal Online 2 is positioned as one of the most uncompromising MMORPGs on the market, aimed squarely at a niche hardcore audience.
Unlike the thematically similar Albion Online, Mortal Online 2 uses a first-person view and a fully 3D world on Unreal Engine. This creates deeper immersion but also raises the hardware bar. The game world is a single seamless continent, Nave, spanning roughly 300 square kilometers.
Gameplay
Combat in Mortal Online 2 is manually controlled โ you swing in real time, and your attack direction follows your mouse movement. Blocking, dodging and bow aiming reward skill rather than raw character stats. PvP can break out anywhere in the open world, and safe zones are kept to a minimum.
Character progression is classless. You distribute points across skills to shape a unique build, with combat, crafting and social skills all available. The total skill-point cap is limited, which forces specialization and encourages cooperation between players with different builds.
Full loot means that on death your character drops all equipped gear and the entire contents of your inventory. This mechanic raises the value of every item and makes any encounter with another player potentially dangerous. A reputation system punishes the killing of innocent players, but it never removes the risk entirely.
World & Professions
The world of Nave features varied biomes: forests, deserts, mountains, swamps and dungeons. Players can build houses and keeps out in the open world, founding settlements and guild bases.
The crafting system is highly detailed. Materials shape an item's properties: the metal you choose determines a weapon's weight and durability, the wood type defines a bow's stats, and the ingredient mix in alchemy sets a potion's effect. On top of that, you can tame animals, cook, farm and gather resources.
Criticism
Mortal Online 2 draws significant criticism on several fronts. The technical state remains rough: players regularly report bugs, crashes and performance issues, especially in zones with large player counts. Unreal Engine optimization is a sore point even for owners of high-end hardware.
The active player count stays low by genre standards. A small population means the open world often feels empty, and finding a group for shared activities can be hard. This is compounded by a steep barrier to entry: newcomers struggle to learn the game without outside guides, and losing gear in the early game can be demoralizing.
The learning curve is one of the steepest in the MMORPG genre. The lack of detailed in-game tutorials, a complex skill system and an aggressive PvP environment create serious hurdles for new players. Star Vault is steadily working on stability and new content, but the pace of updates does not always meet community expectations.
