TL;DR: Sirus is the largest Russian-speaking WoW server, built on the WotLK 3.3.5a client but packed with custom content and mechanics borrowed from Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands โ€” extra races, hero classes, transmog and modern raids running on a light, stable engine. Population stays around 5,000-10,000 concurrent across several realms.

Overview

Sirus is the largest independent Russian-speaking MMORPG project based on World of Warcraft. Launched in 2017, it grew quickly thanks to one signature idea: blending content and mechanics from later WoW expansions (Battle for Azeroth, Shadowlands) into the Wrath of the Lich King client. The result gives players modern content on top of the well-optimized, stable WotLK engine.

The project runs several realms with different rates and rulesets, and concurrent population holds steady at roughly 5,000-10,000 players. Sirus stands out for heavy customization: alongside standard WotLK content, it offers races and classes pulled from later expansions, reworked leveling systems and exclusive content built by the team.

History

Sirus launched in 2017, created by a group of Russian-speaking developers with prior World of Warcraft emulation experience. It was first positioned as a WotLK realm with improved content, but within the first few months it became clear the team had a far more ambitious goal: building their own version of WoW that combines the best elements of multiple expansions.

In 2018-2019 Sirus began actively adding content from Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor. New races arrived (Pandaren, Dark Iron Dwarves, Zandalari Trolls) along with fresh zones and dungeons. This period saw rapid audience growth, as the unique concept pulled in players tired of standard WotLK realms.

By 2020 the project had integrated a large slice of Battle for Azeroth content, including Island Expeditions, the Azerite system and several dungeons. In parallel, work continued on the original WotLK content: raid scripting improved and quest and mechanic bugs were fixed.

From 2021 to 2023 Sirus cemented its position as the largest Russian WoW project. Additional realms were spun up to spread the load, a seasonal update system was introduced, and the development team grew. The project actively partnered with content creators and streamers, which brought in even more players.

Gameplay

Gameplay on Sirus mixes classic WotLK mechanics with modern elements from later expansions. The core combat system, talent trees and leveling match patch 3.3.5a, but many additions sit on top.

PvE content is the project's main draw. Beyond the standard WotLK raids (Naxxramas, Ulduar, Icecrown Citadel), you get adapted raids and dungeons from later expansions. Difficulty ranges from Normal to Mythic, keeping things interesting for casual and hardcore players alike.

The PvP system covers standard arenas and battlegrounds plus custom PvP activities built by the Sirus team. Ranked seasons run regularly with unique rewards for top placements. PvP balance is tuned around the added classes and abilities.

Leveling offers several paths, from a standard x1 rate to accelerated modes. Some realms grant an instant max level for players who want to jump straight into endgame content. Professions account for the added content, including recipes from later expansions.

Features

Sirus's headline feature is large-scale content customization. The project effectively built its own version of World of Warcraft, where elements from different expansions coexist naturally. This includes:

  • Races from expansions up to BFA and Shadowlands (Zandalari Trolls, Kul Tirans, Vulpera and more)
  • Hero classes (Death Knight is available without restrictions; Demon Hunter is in development)
  • Transmogrification โ€” a system for changing the look of your gear
  • Mount and pet collections from every WoW expansion
  • A reworked achievement system with custom rewards

Technically, the project uses a modified WotLK client (3.3.5a) with its own patches that extend the engine. This lets the team add new models, zones and effects without moving to the heavier clients of later expansions. For players, that means better performance with visually rich content.

Sirus offers a developed system of custom quests and storylines written by the team. Some of them tie original WotLK content to events from later expansions, creating a unique narrative experience.

Russian localization is one of its key advantages: all content, including the custom additions, is fully translated into Russian. That contrasts with many international projects where Russian localization is missing or only partial.

Community

The Sirus community is the largest Russian-speaking WoW community among independent projects. The core player base comes from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan, though players from other countries are present too. The main language of communication is Russian.

The project has a strong presence on YouTube and streaming platforms. A number of popular Russian-speaking WoW content creators make videos about Sirus, including guides, patch overviews and raid streams. The official channel publishes update trailers and informational clips.

The guild system plays a key role in the project's social life. Large raiding guilds compete for the fastest content clears, while PvP guilds run intra-realm tournaments with prize pools. For newcomers, there are teaching guilds that help players find their feet.

Moderation on Sirus realms is handled by a team of administrators and volunteer moderators. There is a system for filing reports and bug reports through the account dashboard on the site. The project's official Discord server has tens of thousands of members and serves as the main hub for real-time communication.
