TL;DR: UO Outlands is the biggest free Ultima Online shard, built on classic T2A-era mechanics but with a 100% custom world map, an Aspect endgame system and a fully player-driven economy. Open PvP, skill-based progression and 1000-2500 players online make it the most ambitious project in the UO community.

Overview

UO Outlands is an independent Ultima Online project that stands out from other shards with a completely custom world map and a huge amount of original content. Launched in 2018, it is now the largest and most ambitious project in the Ultima Online community, with 1000 to 2500 players online.

Unlike classic revival shards, UO Outlands does not try to recreate the original as faithfully as possible. Instead it uses T2A (The Second Age) era mechanics as a foundation and builds its own systems, content and an entire custom universe on top of them.

History

Ultima Online is one of the first mass-market MMORPGs, launched by Origin Systems (an Electronic Arts studio) in 1997. It pioneered the sandbox MMORPG genre with an open world and full freedom of action: open PvP, a skill system instead of classes, housing, crafting and trade. Ultima Online had a foundational influence on the entire MMORPG genre.

Over time, official Ultima Online went through many expansions that changed its character: PvP-free zones (Trammel), simplified mechanics and heavier monetization. Many veterans feel these changes stripped away what made the game unique. That sparked an active community of independent projects aiming to recreate the various eras of Ultima Online.

UO Outlands was announced in 2017 and launched in October 2018. From the start it took an unconventional approach: instead of copying the original Britannia map, the team built an entirely new world with its own geography, dungeons and ecosystem. That ambitious approach caught the attention of the Ultima Online community and gave the project steady audience growth.

Gameplay

UO Outlands keeps the core mechanics of Ultima Online: a classless skill system, open PvP, housing, crafting and trade. Your character improves skills through use โ€” the more you use a skill, the faster it grows, up to a cap of 100.0. A total skill cap limits specialization, forcing you to choose between combat and non-combat skills.

The custom UO Outlands map features unique cities, dungeons, wilderness areas and points of interest. It is split into safe zones (cities and their surroundings) and open PvP zones (the wilds). Most valuable resources and content sit in the dangerous zones, creating constant risk-versus-reward tension.

PvE content includes an extensive dungeon system with unique monsters and bosses, an open-world event system (similar to dynamic events), rare-creature hunting and collection mechanics. Crafting is a full and economically meaningful activity: resources are gathered, refined and turned into items of varying quality.

The UO Outlands economy is fully player-driven. Every item is crafted or dropped by monsters, and trade happens through personal vendor shops inside player houses. The lack of an auction house encourages social interaction and exploration as you hunt for the best deals.

Features

The headline feature of UO Outlands is its custom world map. The team didn't just rearrange existing assets โ€” they built a cohesive new world with deliberate geography, logical resource placement and a unique atmosphere. That makes the project compelling even for Ultima Online veterans who know the original map by heart.

The Aspect system is a signature endgame mechanic of UO Outlands. You choose an Aspect (an element) that defines the bonuses and abilities of your gear, then develop it through dedicated content. This adds horizontal progression and build variety on top of the classic skill system.

The housing system is expanded compared to the original: custom plot sizes, original decorative items and houses that integrate directly with the trade system. Houses in UO Outlands sit in the open world and are visible to all players, creating a living, lived-in environment.

The project is completely free with no in-game cash shop. Every item is available through gameplay. Donations are accepted but grant no gameplay advantages.

Community

The UO Outlands community brings together Ultima Online veterans and new players drawn in by the project's reputation. The main hubs are the Discord server, Reddit and the forums. Average population runs 1000-2500 players, peaking in the evening hours on North American time.

Guilds are central to the social structure. Large guilds control territory, organize dungeon raids and run PvP campaigns. Guild rivalry is the main driver of endgame content.

For newcomers there is an extensive wiki, tutorial quests and starter zones. Even so, the barrier to entry stays high: Ultima Online is a fundamentally different game from modern MMORPGs, and learning its mechanics takes patience and a willingness to experiment.
