TL;DR: Aion 2 is NCSoft's UE5 sequel to the 2008 classic โ€” Elyos vs Asmodian faction war, open-world flight from level 1 and large-scale Abyss PvPvE with crossplay between PC and mobile. Live in Korea/Taiwan since Nov 19, 2025; global PC launch on Steam + NC Purple in September 2026.

What Is Aion 2

Aion 2 is an MMORPG from South Korean studio NCSoft and a direct sequel to the original Aion, which launched in 2008 and built a worldwide player base in the millions. The new entry keeps the series' core pillars โ€” the faction war between the Elyos and the Asmodians, the signature flight system and large-scale PvPvE in the Abyss โ€” but rebuilds all of it from scratch on Unreal Engine 5.

The story is set thousands of years after the events of the first game. The world of Atreia has changed: old alliances have been reshuffled and the conflict between the two factions has taken on new dimensions. NCSoft positions the game not as a remaster or a seasonal world, but as a standalone product โ€” with a new story, reworked progression and a cross-platform core.

In Korea and Taiwan, Aion 2 was one of the most anticipated MMORPG releases of 2025. In its first six weeks it earned roughly $70 million in revenue โ€” despite a serious monetization backlash in the opening days (more on that below).

Other regionsTBAAt G-STAR 2025, NCSoft's head of business said the company is in talks with publishing partners for additional markets. No separate dates have been announced โ€” a launch most likely lining up with, or following, the September 2026 global release.

Platforms & Crossplay

Aion 2 launched on three platforms from day one:

  • PC โ€” via the NC Purple launcher and (in the global version) Steam.
  • Android โ€” Google Play.
  • iOS โ€” App Store.

The headline feature is full crossplay: PC and mobile players share the same servers and see each other in the open world, dungeons and PvP zones. Accounts sync through the unified PLAYNC platform. This puts Aion 2 close to the model of modern mobile MMORPGs like MIR4 or Lost Ark Mobile, but with a key difference: the PC version is developed in parallel and is not a port of the mobile build.

The global Steam version is already up as a wishlist page: store.steampowered.com/app/3393110/AION_2. The tag is Free to Play + In-App Purchases. The game ships with English UI and subtitles from the global launch.

Gameplay: Factions, Classes, Flight

Factions

Two camps whose war defines the entire political backdrop of the game:

  • Elyos โ€” inhabitants of sunlit Elysea. Bright aesthetic, white and gold wings, a narrative built around light and nobility.
  • Asmodians โ€” dwellers of shadowy Asmodae. Dark spiked wings, claws, and a theme of survival and hardness. A grim faction, but not a one-dimensionally "evil" one.

A third power is the NPC faction the Balaur, antagonists who inhabit the Abyss and periodically intervene in the conflict between the two sides. All eight classes are available to both factions.

Classes

Aion 2 launches with 8 classes, split across roles:

ClassRoleWeapon
TemplarTankSword & shield
GladiatorTank / DPSTwo-handed sword
AssassinDPSDaggers
RangerRanged DPSBow
SorcererMagic DPS (nuker)Spellbook
SpiritmasterSummoner DPSOrb
ClericMain healerMace
ChanterSupport healer / DPSStaff

The lineup is familiar to veterans of the first Aion: the same archetypes, the same names โ€” but with reworked skill trees built for new combat aimed at cross-platform controls.

Flight

Where the original Aion limited flight to dedicated zones and a timer, Aion 2 builds it into the open world from level 1. The sky is a full space for exploration and combat: you fight on the ground and in the air with no hard transitions between modes. Zone layouts are designed around verticality โ€” floating islands, sky citadels and multi-level chasms.

The Abyss & PvPvE

The central PvPvE zone โ€” the Abyss โ€” returns in a reworked form. It's a multi-level vertical space where Elyos, Asmodians and Balaur clash all at once. Key mechanics:

MechanicWhat it does
Fortress siegesHundreds of players, siege weapons and aerial duels over control of fortresses.
Abyss Points (AP)Earned by killing players and monsters; spent on top-tier PvP gear.
RiftingSmall-group invasions of enemy territory โ€” a classic series mechanic.
ArenasStructured PvP modes for ranked matches.

The PvPvE design means that in the open world you almost never fight only players or only monsters โ€” the threats arrive at the same time.

Graphics & Engine

Aion 2 runs on Unreal Engine 5, with the full next-gen toolset: Lumen (real-time global illumination), Nanite (virtualized high-detail geometry) and a scalable renderer for mobile. Visually the game keeps the original's aesthetic โ€” floating islands, glowing wings, the contrast between Elysea and Asmodae โ€” but moves it into a new technical dimension.

Minimum PC requirements: Windows 10/11 64-bit, Ryzen 5 2600 or i5-10500, 8 GB RAM, GTX 1050 Ti (4 GB), 100 GB SSD. Recommended: Ryzen 7 3700X or i7-11700, 16 GB RAM, RTX 2070 or RX 5700 XT (8 GB).

The mobile client runs on the same engine at a reduced quality profile. Crossplay is handled by server-side syncing rather than a single client โ€” the PC and mobile builds exist separately.

Monetization & Launch Backlash

Aion 2 is Free-to-Play with an in-game shop built on the premium currency Quna. The model includes a Battle Pass and a subscription.

The Korea/Taiwan launch on November 19, 2025 came with a sharp crisis. Players found that progression-affecting items had been added to the Quna shop: Combat Enhancement Scrolls and Soul Books โ€” items needed to develop your character. This directly contradicted the announced fair-play, no pay-to-win policy.

The reaction was harsh: on the first day after launch NCSoft's stock fell 15%. Even the Korean audience, traditionally tolerant of aggressive monetization, piled pressure on the developer. Within 15 hours of launch NCSoft ran an emergency apology stream, pulled the controversial items from the shop and mailed compensation packages to every player via in-game mail. The developers publicly admitted that "certain shop decisions were mistakes."

As of June 2026, ahead of the global launch, NCSoft has stated that the shop will be limited to cosmetic items: skins, mounts and decorative wings. The core story and PvE content are free. The exact subscription and Battle Pass terms for the Western version have not been officially published at the time of writing โ€” NCSoft promises details closer to September 2026.

Despite the backlash, Aion 2 pulled in roughly $70 million in its first six weeks on the Korean and Taiwanese markets alone โ€” a sign of strong demand regardless of the monetization.

Global Launch & Availability

The global PC launch of Aion 2 is officially confirmed for September 2026. The announcement came at Summer Game Fest on June 5, 2026. Distribution is via Steam and the NC Purple launcher. Servers will be deployed in North America, South America, Europe and Japan. The client supports 10 languages, including English.

The global version is positioned as a native PC build, optimized separately from mobile. No Early Access is planned โ€” it launches straight into the full F2P format.

For some markets a dedicated publisher has not yet been named. At G-STAR 2025, NCSoft's head of business said talks with partners are underway. The current Korea/Taiwan servers are restricted to in-region IPs. After the September 2026 global launch, Steam-based access is technically possible โ€” though the final regional rollout has not been announced.

If you want to play a large-scale fantasy MMORPG right now โ€” without waiting for the Aion 2 global launch โ€” one option is Scryde: a standalone open-world PvP game world that has run continuously for more than 11 years.

Who Is This Game For

Aion 2 aims at several audiences at once.

Veterans of the original Aion get familiar factions, classes and the Abyss โ€” but in a technically modern package with open-world flight and large-scale sieges. For anyone who poured hundreds of hours into Elysea or Asmodae back in 2008โ€“2012, it's a direct nostalgia hit.

New MMORPG players can jump in without knowing the first game's story. Aion 2 starts a separate plot and re-explains every mechanic. Crossplay from mobile lowers the barrier to entry.

Fans of PvP-focused MMORPGs โ€” the game is built around faction war, fortress sieges and rifting. If you want an MMORPG centered on organized, large-scale PvP rather than just raid PvE, Aion 2 lands squarely in that niche.

Monetization skeptics should wait out the first weeks of the global launch and see whether NCSoft keeps its cosmetic-only promises for the Western version. The Korean launch was a clear lesson โ€” and the company drew public conclusions from it. Repeating the same mistake on a Western audience is unlikely.
