Overview
Lu4 (read as "Luch", official site lu4.org, full name Liberta Ultimata 4) is a project based on Lineage 2, developed by the MasterWork (MW) and E-Global teams. Its headline feature is moving the classic MMORPG onto the modern Unreal Engine 5 engine while keeping the recognizable gameplay and atmosphere of the original. It is an unofficial build: the project is made by Lineage 2 server teams, not by the rights holder NCSoft.
Unreal Engine 5
For years the original Lineage 2 ran on the dated Unreal Engine 2. The Lu4 team is moving the game to Unreal Engine 5 โ a modern graphics core with the Lumen lighting and Nanite geometry systems. In practice that means updated character and environment models, dynamic light and shadows, new animations, a cinematic camera and a reworked user interface. At the same time the developers frame the project as a "return to classic roots" โ a game that feels familiar rather than a remake with changed gameplay.

MasterWork & E-Global
MasterWork is a well-known Lineage 2 server lineup with a long history. In 2024 a joint effort with E-Global, a network of custom servers, was announced. Lu4 grew out of that collaboration โ a new season in the High Five world that blends classic mechanics with a technical overhaul. Development is iterative, moving from pre-alpha to alpha on the new engine.
Servers & Player Counts
At the time of writing, the MasterWork ecosystem runs several game worlds (notably Eternal and Gamma) with a stable combined population of around 6,000โ7,000 players. The first Unreal Engine 5 alpha was slated for June 12. Exact server settings, rates and stage schedules are published on the official site and in the project's communities.
Caveats
Lu4 is an unofficial Lineage 2-based project with no ties to the rights holder NCSoft, which is typical for this segment and carries the usual considerations: no publisher guarantees, content that depends on the team's decisions, and possible economy and balance changes between stages. At announcement the Unreal Engine 5 client was in alpha testing, so some advertised features may not have been fully available yet. As with any community server, the final experience depends on how stable each stage runs and on its monetization policy.
