TL;DR: Lineage 2 High Five (H5) is the final chronicle of the classic L2 era, released in 2010. It bundles seven years of content into one client: Vitality, subclass certification skills, expanded augmentation, and the Freya and Seed of Annihilation zones. It's the deepest classic version โ€” and still the most popular chronicle on community servers.

What Is High Five

Lineage 2 High Five (short forms: H5, L2 H5) is the final chronicle of the Chaotic Throne period, released by NCSoft in 2010. It came out after Freya and was the last major chronicle of the game's classic era: the next update, Goddess of Destruction (2011), rewrote the class system and mechanics so thoroughly that fans still consider it a separate game.

The chronicle line runs: Prelude โ†’ C1-C6 Interlude โ†’ Kamael โ†’ Gracia โ†’ Freya โ†’ High Five โ†’ Goddess of Destruction. H5 is seven years of accumulated content gathered into a single client. That's exactly why servers on this chronicle draw the largest player counts of any classic version: the game is deep enough for hardcore players and convenient enough not to scare off newcomers.

The full official name is Lineage II: The Chaotic Throne โ€” High Five. The update rolled out in stages (Part 1-5) from 2010 into early 2011, adding new zones, balance patches and content. The H5 client is what most veterans call "real Lineage 2".

Key H5 Mechanics

Vitality โ€” XP for logging in

The Vitality system debuted in Gracia and was fully polished in High Five. A gray bar with four charge levels sits under your MP bar. Each level grants an XP bonus, from +25% at the first level to +300% at the fourth. Vitality drains as you kill mobs and only refills while you're offline (roughly 1000 points per hour) or through special potions and event items.

In practice that means: log in after work, and your first hour and a half or two of leveling go two to three times faster. The mechanic rewards daily logins while removing the old-chronicle requirement to grind around the clock with no breaks.

Certification skills โ€” passive abilities

The certification system is one of H5's deepest mechanics. After completing a quest from the NPC Avant-Garde (second floor of Ivory Tower) and leveling a subclass, your character earns certificates at subclass levels 65, 70, 75 and 80. Each certificate converts into one of several passive abilities: increased CP, an attack or defense bonus, faster casting, or bonuses to specific main-class skills.

With three leveled subclasses, a character can collect up to 12 certification skills. Choosing the right set is part of character theorycrafting in H5 and separates experienced players from newcomers. For a breakdown of optimal sets, see the tier list page.

Weapon and armor augmentation

The augmentation system had existed since Kamael, but H5 expanded its effect pool. Adding a Life Stone to a weapon grants one of several hundred random bonuses: active skills (instant spirit summon, extra damage), passive bonuses (P.Atk/M.Atk, Atk. Spd) or defensive abilities. Top augments from high-grade Life Stones are part of the BiS build for most classes in PvP.

You can also augment jewelry โ€” rings, earrings and necklaces. This opens an extra optimization layer that matters most for endgame PvP and the Olympiad.

Freya and Seed of Annihilation

H5 includes content from the two previous major updates. Freya added the Ice Island with instances of varying difficulty (Normal, Hard, Extreme) and the Ice Queen boss โ€” one of the most visually stunning and technically demanding encounters in classic Lineage 2. Seed of Annihilation is a large raid complex with three difficulty tiers, built for clans of 40-50 players.

On top of that, H5 includes Primeval Isle (dinosaur hunting with proto-Ertheia), Hellbound (a zone with a reputation system that unlocks new areas and NPCs), and Aerial Cleft (aerial hunting on flying mounts). Each zone targets a specific gear and character level, creating a natural progression from level 75 up to 85.

Dual class and Noblesse

The Noblesse system, which appeared back in Gracia, became a mandatory part of progression in H5. Noblesse status unlocks the Olympiad, the Noblesse Blessing skills (debuff protection), sub-stack abilities and certain raid zones. Earning it without a clan and the help of high-level players is difficult โ€” a deliberate social gate that pushes players to join clans.

H5 vs Interlude

"Interlude or H5" is one of the most common questions on community-server forums. Both are classic chronicles, both have no auto-hunt, and both demand real time and social ties. The difference is in scope and complexity.

Interlude (C6) is a 2006 snapshot. Clean, predictable mechanics: 35 classes, a limited set of raids (Baium, Antharas, Valakas, Zaken, Frintezza) and a clear progression. You can realistically clear all of its content in a few months of active play. That simplicity is exactly what makes Interlude timeless: on such a server it's always easy to know what to do next.

High Five adds four more years of content on top:

  • Kamael โ€” the sixth race, with unique soul-absorption mechanics;
  • 11 extra final-rank classes;
  • Vitality, subclass certification skills, expanded augmentation;
  • Freya, Seed of Annihilation, Hellbound, Primeval Isle;
  • Fortresses โ€” intermediate PvP objectives between castles;
  • Reworked high-level PvP balance.

H5 takes more time to learn and far more time to clear at endgame. In return, you can live in it for years. If you want a "log in, soak up the atmosphere, log out" server, pick Interlude. If you want depth and a year or more of content ahead of you, pick H5. For a detailed comparison, see the Lineage 2 Interlude article.

H5 shares with Classic (NCSoft's official mode) the lack of auto-hunt and the focus on group play, but Classic runs on a newer engine and different balance. Read: Lineage 2 Classic.

Classes, Races & Endgame

H5 features six races: Human, Light Elf, Dark Elf, Orc, Dwarf and Kamael (added in the Kamael update). Kamael are the only race that starts with a unique Soul Breaker/Berserker class and uses soul absorption to power up skills.

Each race offers several class chains with two class transfers โ€” at level 40 and level 76. There are roughly 46 final-rank classes (level 76+). Most come in two specializations depending on your build direction.

The H5 endgame is built around several activities:

  • Olympiad โ€” a weekly 1v1 and team PvP tournament. Winners earn Hero status with special weapons, skills and visual flair. Hero status is the main PvP trophy in classic Lineage 2.
  • Castle sieges โ€” clan wars for control of nine castles (Aden, Rune, Goddard and others). A castle grants its clan taxes, bonuses and social prestige. H5 adds Fortresses โ€” intermediate PvP objectives with more frequent sieges.
  • Epic Bosses โ€” Baium, Antharas, Valakas, Zaken, Frintezza, Queen Ant, Freya, Core, Orfen. Each spawns on a timer and demands a coordinated raid of 30 to 150 players.
  • Seven Signs โ€” a cyclical inter-clan conflict between the Dawn and Dusk factions that determines access to certain zones and raid bosses.

Client & System Requirements

The H5 client is distributed by servers themselves โ€” NCSoft's official download closed long ago. The client is around 6-8 GB. Most servers provide their own patcher that updates the client to the required revision.

Minimum system requirements:

  • CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz or AMD equivalent;
  • RAM: 1 GB (2 GB recommended);
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT or ATI Radeon X1600 Pro, 256 MB VRAM;
  • DirectX 9.0c;
  • OS: Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 10 / 11 (with compatibility);
  • Internet: 512 Kbps or faster (2+ Mbps recommended).

Recommended:

  • CPU: dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz or better;
  • RAM: 2-4 GB;
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT / ATI Radeon HD 3870, 512 MB VRAM;
  • OS: Windows 7 or newer (64-bit).

The game engine is a modified Unreal Engine 2.5. On modern machines running Windows 10/11 the client launches without issues; some servers offer improved textures and a fixed renderer for high resolutions.

High Five Servers Today

H5 is the undisputed leader in active community servers. Aggregators like Hopzone and L2List show 50 to 100 active H5 projects at any given moment. There are a few reasons.

First, H5 has the most mature emulator base: open-source L2J cores and L2Off forks cover almost the entire chronicle's content. Launching a working H5 server is technically easier than running a later chronicle.

Second, H5 is the chronicle the current core audience grew up on โ€” the 25-40 crowd that is both nostalgic and willing to spend. H5's mechanics are deep enough to hold an experienced player for months and familiar enough to require no learning from scratch.

Rates on H5 servers vary wildly: from x1 (hardcore, an exact copy of the official pace) to x10000 (fast PvP with no grind). The most popular formats are x3-x15 (a balance of atmosphere and speed) and high rates of x500+ for pure PvP content. Top servers with full endgame and active sieges peak at 1000-5000 players online.
