Lineage 2 chronicles are the major content updates โ sagas and chapters โ released since the game launched in 2003โ2004. Each one expanded the world, the gameplay and the systems: new races, zones, classes, bosses and mechanics, sometimes reshaping the philosophy of the game itself. More than twenty major versions have shipped over two decades, and today picking a chronicle is one of the first questions for anyone returning to the world of Aden.

Where It All Began: C1โC4
Lineage 2 launched in Korea in 2003 as Prelude โ a dark fantasy MMORPG with a fully open world, a harsh karma system and massive castle sieges. It was a fundamentally different game from its rivals of the era: no instances, no corridors โ just a living community, constant territory wars and real consequences for killing other players.
C1 (Harbingers of War) in 2004 was the first major update, expanding the world with new monsters and quests. C2 (Age of Splendor) added the manor system โ an economic tool that gave clans real control over in-game resources. C3 (Rise of Darkness) introduced Territory Wars (TW) and widened the class roster. The real breakthrough was C4 (Scions of Destiny): subclasses let every character pick up a second profession, and Noblesse certifications unlocked the Olympiad and upgraded skills. C5 (Oath of Blood) closed the era out with a refined alliance system and PvP balance.
C4 is still regarded as one of the most balanced and "alive" slices of the game: less automation, more reliance on real player interaction.
Interlude โ The Golden Classic
Interlude launched in Korea in December 2006 and on Western servers in April 2007. Twenty years on, this is the chronicle the community still calls the "gold standard" of Lineage 2. Why? Interlude introduced the full Olympiad โ a recurring PvP tournament for Noblesse characters โ along with the Primeval Isle dinosaur zone and new epic bosses. At the same time it kept the harshness of the early chronicles: slow leveling, a dangerous world, and gear that actually mattered.
Interlude is also when Lineage 2 hit its peak in the West. Millions of players remember the Aden and Giran castle sieges and the late-night raids on Antharas and Valakas from this exact version. Today Interlude is the clear leader by server count: across 2024โ2025, of the 1,000+ new community projects launched, roughly 644 ran on Interlude. For a full breakdown, see the Lineage 2 Interlude page.
High Five โ Peak Old-School
After Interlude came The Kamael (2007 โ new Kamael race, reworked client, forts), Hellbound (2008 โ level cap 85, skills 81+), the Gracia series (2008โ2009 โ Vitality system, flying mounts) and Freya (2010 โ ice goddess, winter raids). Each chronicle layered on new content while keeping the spirit of "old" Lineage 2.
The culmination of that line was High Five (late 2010 to early 2011, four updates). NCSoft actively gathered community feedback and acted on it: class balance was reworked, new zones and instances were added, and performance improved. High Five topped the server and player charts of its time and is still the second most popular chronicle after Interlude. Many consider it the last "honest" chronicle before major changes to the monetization model. More on the Lineage 2 High Five page.
Gracia, Freya and Goddess of Destruction
The Gracia series deserves a closer look. Gracia Part 1 and Part 2 (2008) introduced the Vitality system โ an XP bonus that builds up while you are offline, giving players a real reason to take breaks. Gracia Final (April 2009) closed the story arc and added final bosses. Gracia Epilogue (November 2009) refined the balance. Many players call Gracia Epilogue an "underrated" chronicle โ close to Interlude in feel, but richer under the hood.
The turning point came in November 2011 with Goddess of Destruction (GoD). NCSoft moved Lineage 2 to a free-to-play model and overhauled the class system through Awakening. All prior professions were merged into new "awakened" classes, the level cap rose, and the game became more accessible โ though many veterans feel it lost some of its depth. Within the GoD cycle came Tauti (July 2012), Glory Days (October 2012) and Lindvior (May 2013), each adding a new epic boss and a batch of content.
Modern Chronicles: Helios, Grand Crusade, Fafurion, Prelude of War
After GoD the game kept evolving as a "live" stream of major updates, without the strict saga/chronicle structure:
- Helios (2016) โ new dungeons, improved crafting and gear systems.
- Grand Crusade (March 2017) โ a large narrative arc about the war of the gods, reworked PvP zones and epic questlines.
- Fafurion (2018โ2019) โ the water dragon Fafurion as a new epic boss, plus an expanded artifact and dungeon system.
- Prelude of War (2019โ2020) โ a pre-war narrative with new progression mechanics and zones.
These updates target the audience of the official "live" servers, where you work through the whole progression over time. On community servers they appear far less often โ players still prefer Interlude and High Five.
Classic, Essence and Legacy โ What's the Difference
In 2014 NCSoft launched a separate branch, Lineage 2 Classic โ an official "retro" server that returns players to the feel of the early chronicles (C1โC4 difficulty), with no progression boosts and classic races. In the CIS region the same product shipped under the Legacy brand. It is not just an old client โ it is a new server with "the way it was, but more stable" balance.
Essence is another separate branch that arrived later. It offers a streamlined, faster experience: trimmed-down classes, an auto-buff panel, and solo farming from the very first levels. Essence is built for players who want to get into the world of Aden quickly without hours of grinding. In practice it is a separate game in a familiar L2 universe but with different progression rules.
So today there are three parallel official branches: Live/Main (current updates), Classic/Legacy (old-school gameplay) and Essence (the lightweight version). Dedicated pages for each: Main (Live), Classic, Legacy, Essence.
Which Chronicles Are Popular on Servers Now
Among community servers the picture is telling. According to aggregators for 2024โ2025, out of more than a thousand new projects, Interlude dominates โ around 63% of all new servers. High Five holds a firm second place, followed by Essence, Goddess of Destruction and Gracia Epilogue. The reason is simple: these chronicles offer the best balance of old-school difficulty, lively PvP and a working pool of content.
Among active projects you will find servers of every rate and format. Part of the audience is not just looking for "another Interlude" but for full games with their own development. One example is Scryde, a standalone online MMORPG with mechanics inspired by the classic L2 lineage but with original additions. The full catalog of servers and projects will help you navigate the options.
