Overview
Lineage 2 Classic is an official version of Lineage 2, developed by NCSoft and running alongside the main game. It is not a community server or a fan-made copy of the old chronicles: Classic is a licensed product with its own development team, regular updates, and official servers across every major region.
The mode launched in South Korea in 2014 and reached Russia the same year through publisher Innova (the 4Game platform). North America and Europe, operated by NCSoft, received Classic on October 3, 2018. Since launch the line has gone through several major content updates and remains an active part of NCSoft's portfolio alongside Lineage 2 Essence and the main game.
Classic's audience is Lineage 2 veterans who want the feel of the early years: slow, focused gameplay where every level feels like an achievement. NCSoft positions the mode as a "hardcore" alternative path within the Lineage 2 ecosystem.
Philosophy & Gameplay
Classic is built on three principles that deliberately push back against modern MMORPG trends.
| Principle | What it means |
|---|---|
| Slow grinding | The XP curve is intentionally stretched. A single level can take hours, and at high level, days of active play. There is no auto-content that "gives" you a level โ every level is earned. |
| Party value | Many hunting zones are tuned for a group. A solo character farms slower and at greater risk. Tanks hold aggro, healers restore HP, buffers empower the party โ and with no auto-hunt, everyone has to play actively. |
| Hardcore economy | Consumables and gear cost far more relative to your income. Every successful craft or rare drop has real value, and player trading stays a living necessity rather than an optional activity. |
This differs sharply from Essence, where autonomous, hands-off play is the core mechanic. Together these principles create an experience that is hard to find in modern MMORPGs with their instances, boosts, and automation. Players come to Classic not for convenience but for the feeling of progress earned by hand.
Classic vs Interlude & High Five
One of the biggest sources of confusion around Classic: many players expect to get "Interlude," the 2006 version that became the basis for thousands of community servers. Classic is not that.
What Interlude is. Interlude is a specific chronicle of the original Lineage 2 (C4 Scions of Destiny โ C5 Oath of Blood โ Interlude, 2006). It went down in history as the most balanced PvP version of the game before the global redesign in "Goddess of Destruction" (2011). The vast majority of community servers run on Interlude or High Five (2010), the last chronicle of the "Chaotic Throne" arc.
What Classic is. Classic is a standalone official NCSoft line that started near the early C1/C2 chronicles (2003โ2004) and evolved along its own path. That means Classic has content and mechanics that never existed in Interlude: new hunting zones, leveling mechanics, and reworked crafting systems. At the same time, Classic keeps the hardcore philosophy of those years โ no auto-hunt, no accelerated progress, no instances for solo content.
The practical takeaway: if you are looking for "that exact Interlude" with its classic PvP balance, Classic gives a similar spirit but not an identical product. If you want hardcore progression in an officially supported environment, Classic is the right pick. You can explore the full history of the official chronicles in Lineage 2 Chronicles.
For a deeper comparison: Lineage 2 Interlude is a separate page covering that chronicle as a historical phenomenon and the foundation of the community-server scene; Lineage 2 Main covers the main Live version with the full content of all chronicles.
Classic vs Essence
In NCSoft's portfolio, Classic and Essence run side by side โ and that is no accident. They target different audiences and complement each other rather than compete. Here is how they line up:
| Aspect | Classic | Essence |
|---|---|---|
| Pace | Slow, deliberate grinding | Accelerated progress |
| Play style | Manual control, active combat | Auto-hunt, hands-off |
| Party | Group play is essential | Built around solo play |
| Self-buffs | Buffer-dependent | Self-buffs from level 20 |
| Target player | Veterans with time and patience | Busy adults, 1โ2 hours a day |
| Launch | 2014 | 2019 |
By philosophy these are direct opposites: Classic demands presence and attention, while Essence delegates the grind to automation. Technically both run on the same Lineage 2 tech base and are maintained by NCSoft โ but the gameplay experience differs fundamentally. For more on Essence, see the Lineage 2 Essence page.
Classes & Progression
Classic keeps the classic Lineage 2 class system with three class transfers (levels 20, 40, and 76). Each class belongs to one of six races โ Human, Elf, Dark Elf, Orc, Dwarf, and Kamael โ and your starting race determines which class chains are available.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Level 1โ20 | Start in your race's starting village, learn basic skills, and get your first taste of party mechanics. |
| Level 20โ40 | 1st class transfer; your character gains a specialization (fighter, mage, archer, support). Hunting zones become dangerous to solo. |
| Level 40โ76 | 2nd class transfer; the bulk of leveling, where a party is needed to farm efficiently. This is where Classic's philosophy truly shows. |
| Level 76+ | 3rd class transfer and endgame: castle sieges, epic bosses, and clan wars. |
The crafting system in Classic runs through Dwarven spoilers and crafters: some of the best gear is unavailable in shops and can only be made by crafting from harvested materials. This creates a living economy where class diversity has an economic dimension.
If you are new to Lineage 2, the beginner's guide covers the core mechanics that apply to every mode. For leveling specifics, see the leveling guide.
Publishers & Regions
Lineage 2 Classic runs in several regions through different operators.
- Korea โ Classic first launched in 2014, operated directly by NCSoft. Every update for the line started with the Korean version.
- Russia and the CIS โ Classic launched in November 2014 through publisher Innova on the 4Game platform (4game.com). Innova has localized Lineage 2 for the Russian audience for over 15 years and is the sole official operator of the game in the region.
- North America โ Classic launched on October 3, 2018 by NCSoft on the Talking Island and Giran servers.
- Europe โ same as NA, launched in October 2018 through NCSoft.
- Southeast Asia, Japan, Taiwan โ served by regional NCSoft partners.
The base access model is Free-to-Play with an in-game shop. Historically, Classic in Russia started as a paid subscription project (around 300 rubles per month in 2014) but later moved to the F2P model standard for the 4Game platform.
Alongside the Classic line, in February 2026 NCSoft launched a new standalone project in Korea called Lineage Classic โ technically a separate game on a modern engine that recreates version 1.5 of the original Lineage II. This is a separate product and not a continuation of the Classic line described here.
Criticism
Classic has received mixed reviews โ for different reasons among different groups of players.
"Not the right Classic." The most common complaint: Classic is not Interlude. Players who grew up on community servers running C4โC6 chronicles expected an exact copy of those versions. Classic offers the hardcore spirit but different content: different zones, different balance decisions, a different development path. It is not "that same game" but an official reimagining of it.
Monetization. The shift to F2P brought a shop with items that speed up progress. Part of the audience feels this breaks the hardcore principle: pay-to-win elements undermine the value of slow grinding, which is exactly what players came for.
A gap with "nostalgia" expectations. Classic was built not as a museum but as a living product: NCSoft adds new content, tweaks balance, and introduces mechanics that did not exist in the early chronicles. For some players this expands the game; for others it breaks the authenticity of the experience.
Competition from community servers. Against mature community servers that offer exact copies of Interlude or High Five without in-game shops, Classic has to compete for its audience. Many veterans choose community projects, considering them closer to the original experience despite the lack of official support.
