Overview
Lineage 2 Legacy is the official classic mode of the Lineage 2 MMORPG, developed by NCSoft and launched in Russia and Europe on 18 November 2015 by publisher Innova / 4Game. It's a fully licensed platform with regular updates, official support and developer-maintained servers.
The Legacy concept rests on one idea: reviving the era of the first chronicles with modern conveniences. NCSoft took the atmosphere, zones and class system of C1โC4 โ the period fans remember most fondly โ and added a current interface, reworked balance and live endgame content. The familiar Giran, Dion, Cruma and the early-chronicle hunting grounds are all here, running on a modern client.
Unlike Lineage 2 Essence, Legacy does not cater to the solo player or auto-hunt. The world is built so you can't get far without a party: tanks hold the bosses, buffers support the group, healers cover the damage. This is a deliberate design choice, not a limitation.
The access model has been Free-to-Play since March 2022. Before that, the game ran on a subscription. You can download the client from the official site, ru.4game.ru/lineage2legacy.
Key Features
Legacy stands apart from the other Lineage 2 modes on several fronts:
| Feature | How it works in Legacy |
|---|---|
| Party-driven gameplay | Every class fills a specific role โ tank, healer, buffer, DD. Trying to clear serious content solo is a losing strategy. Party play isn't optional; it's the base design. |
| Hardcore leveling | Progress is slow โ Legacy rates near x1, and every level past 50 feels like a separate achievement. A deliberate choice for players who value the journey over the result. |
| Open-world PvP & sieges | Mass PvP can break out anywhere in the open world. Castle sieges and clan territory wars are the server's central events. The clan holding a castle collects taxes and controls the local economy. |
| Living economy | Player trading is the main way to gear up. Crafting, materials and recipes all pass through other players' hands. The auction house doesn't replace personal interaction. |
| Modern mechanics on a classic base | Agathions (companion pets with passive bonuses), an improved UI, current events and reworked class balance โ features absent from C1โC4, layered on top of the classic foundation. |
| 7 races, 34 classes | Humans, Elves, Dark Elves, Orcs, Dwarves, Kamael and โ in some updates โ additional races. The class system follows the original branches: 1st class transfer โ 2nd โ 3rd. |
Legacy vs Essence โ Which to Pick
The query "lineage 2 legacy vs essence" is one of the top searches about the game โ and for good reason. These are two official modes of the same universe, but with fundamentally different philosophies.
| Aspect | Legacy | Essence |
|---|---|---|
| Pace | Slow, hardcore (4/10 speed); rewards regular play and a live community | Fast leveling (8/10 speed); solo progression from level 20 |
| Auto-hunt | None โ the game expects your active input | Core mechanic; the character can farm AFK for hours |
| Solo vs party | Built around the party โ every class is a role | Solo-friendly; each class is self-sufficient early |
| PvP focus | Mass PvP first: 100v100 sieges, clan wars, territory control | Has PvP content, but it's less central to the daily loop |
| Best for | Players who want the classic hardcore L2 grind | Newcomers and busy players short on time |
In Essence, auto-hunt is the official, central mechanic: the character attacks, uses skills and consumables on its own. In Legacy, there is no auto-hunt โ every action you take matters. A level earned over a week of active party farming in Legacy is worth more than one ground out by auto-hunt overnight in Essence.
Both modes are official and maintained by NCSoft and Innova โ this isn't a question of "real" versus "fake" Lineage 2, it's a question of playstyle and lifestyle.
Legacy vs Classic โ The Difference
Legacy and Lineage 2 Classic are the closest relatives among the official modes. Both appeal to the early chronicles, both are hardcore, both are official. The differences are in the details โ but the details matter.
| Aspect | Classic | Legacy |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Faithfully recreates the original 2003โ2007 mechanics | Concentrates on team play and PvP content |
| Dual class | Yes โ switch between two developed classes for role flexibility | No dual-class system; strict per-class specialization instead |
| Difficulty | Moderately hard (8/10); time-consuming but not brutal | Maximum among official modes (10/10) |
If Classic is "the original Lineage 2 with polish," Legacy is "the original Lineage 2 with a maximum focus on team hardcore." Both run and are maintained by Innova through 4Game. For more on the early-chronicle mechanics, see The History of Lineage 2 Chronicles.

Classes & Races
Legacy offers 7 races โ Humans, Elves, Dark Elves, Orcs, Dwarves, Kamael and later-added races โ and 34 classes with a three-stage progression system. The class chains follow the original early-chronicle logic: the 1st class transfer is available at level 20, the 2nd at 40 and the 3rd at 76.
Every class in Legacy fills a strictly defined role:
| Role | Classes | Job in a party |
|---|---|---|
| Tanks | Dark Avenger, Paladin, Temple Knight, Shillien Knight | Take damage, hold boss aggro and protect the group in PvP. |
| Healers | Bishop, Elder, Shillien Elder | Restore HP โ raids are impossible without them. |
| Buffers & support | Overlord, Warcryer, Prophet, Warlock, Bladedancer, Swordsinger | Empower the whole group; their value scales with party size. |
| Melee DD | Gladiator, Warlord, Tyrant and others | The main close-range damage dealers. |
| Archers & mages | Hawkeye, Sorcerer, Necromancer and more | Ranged DD with different leveling and gear setups. |
| Dwarf crafters | Warsmith, Bounty Hunter | Weapon and armor specialists โ indispensable to the economy. |
Choosing a class in Legacy is a long-term decision. Re-rolling costs a lot of time and resources, so veteran players advise settling on your preferred role first, then digging into specific branches. For a detailed breakdown of class mechanics, see the Talent System section.
Publisher & Regions
In Russia and the CIS, Lineage 2 Legacy is published by Innova through the 4Game platform โ the same NCSoft partner that has localized the main Lineage 2 modes for the region for over 15 years. European servers run under the same brand.
The RU/EU launch took place on 18 November 2015. Since March 2022, the game has gone fully Free-to-Play โ you can download and play without paying. There is an in-game shop, but Legacy is positioned as "no pay-to-win" in official 4Game materials.
The client downloads through the 4Game platform. The current link and system requirements are on the official site. Minimum requirements: Windows 7+, 2 GB RAM, a GeForce 6600GT-class GPU, 30 GB of disk space.
The official Innova Lineage 2 ecosystem currently runs three parallel modes: Legacy, Essence and Main (Live). Each is maintained independently and gets its own updates.
