What Is Lineage 2 Main
Lineage 2 Main is the official name of the primary, "live" version of the MMORPG Lineage 2 by developer NCSoft. The English-speaking community more often calls it Live, stressing that this is where all the current content lands โ unlike the retro Classic, Essence and Legacy modes.
The line traces back to 2003, when Lineage II launched in Korea, reaching Europe and Russia by 2004-2005. Over more than 20 years the game has passed through dozens of chronicles, from Prelude of War to today's large seasonal updates. In 2026 NCSoft actively supports Main: regular patches, seasonal events (including the spring 2026 events) and the game's 22nd anniversary all arrived with a stable player base.
Main's defining trait is content completeness. It has everything the other modes lack: the full pool of awakened classes, castle and fortress sieges with current mechanics, multi-tier dungeons, epic raids, clan wars and a deep crafting system. Where Essence is built for casual 2-3 hour sessions, Main is for players ready to dive into the MMORPG seriously.
Main vs Classic, Essence, Legacy
NCSoft develops several parallel Lineage 2 lines. These are not server modes of one game โ each has its own client base, its own servers and its own audience:
- Main (Live) โ the most modern content. Every new chronicle, class and mechanic launches here. Best for players who want the current MMORPG experience rather than nostalgia.
- Classic โ a retro mode focused on the hardcore gameplay of the early chronicles (C1-C6, High Five). Slow grinding, mandatory party play, minimal automation. Its closest analogue is High Five.
- Legacy โ another classic branch, sometimes used as a synonym for Classic in some regions; it leans on the authenticity of early Lineage 2.
- Essence โ a "lite" mode with auto-hunt, accelerated progression and self-sufficient classes for adult players with limited time.
The key fork for a newcomer: if you want to play the early Lineage 2 of 2003-2008, that's Classic or Legacy. If you want a modern MMO with the full content set, that's Main. If you only have an hour or two a day, that's Essence.
Main differs from Classic not only in its set of chronicles but in philosophy: it welcomes solo progress at low levels, has a developed onboarding system, and its endgame centers on clan content and high-level raids. In Classic a mandatory party is needed from the first levels, and the idea of "endgame" is blurred by the slow grind.
The comparison with Essence is even starker: Essence removed mandatory parties, added auto-hunt from level 1 and simplified classes down to self-buffs. Main expects deep mastery of your class, active group play at high levels and complex character-strengthening chains.
Classes & Races
Lineage 2 Main offers 6 races: Humans, Elves, Dark Elves, Orcs, Dwarves and Kamael โ each with several class branches. In total the game has more than 40 awakened classes after the Awakening system introduced in the Goddess of Destruction chronicle.
In summer 2025 Main gained a new class โ the Wolf Waker, available to male Humans: a melee class with a werewolf transformation, a combo system and unique awakening forms. At the same time the Wynn Summoner received reworked summons adapted to combat roles in the current endgame.
The classic role split is preserved: tanks (Human Knight โ Hell Knight / Phoenix Knight), healers (Bishop, Elven Elder, Shillien Saint), damage dealers (Dreadnought, Duelist, Grand Khavatari, Maestro and others), support / buffers (Dominator, Doomcryer) and nukers (Archmage, Mystic Muse, Storm Screamer). After Awakening, every class gains expanded skills and a new development branch.
Class guides for newcomers are on the beginner's guide page.
Endgame & Current Content
Main's endgame is built on several pillars:
- Castle and fortress sieges โ clan PvP events that grant bonuses to the whole clan and access to unique resources.
- Epic raids โ Antharas, Valakas, Baium, Frintezza; they require alliance coordination.
- Instances and dungeons โ high-level zones with unique loot and daily resets.
- Open-world bosses โ 2025 added the Chaotic Golem in Plundered Plains; its spawn is random and time-to-kill is short, so it demands fast coordination.
- Clan wars and PvP โ flag mechanics, tournaments and the Olympiad.
Current 2025-2026 chronicles arrive under themed names (the spring 2026 update, the Khashi Orc storyline with solo dungeons and collectible materials). NCSoft publishes patch notes on lineage2.com and on eu.4game.com. Current news and the Lineage 2 update chronicles are in our news section.
Publisher, Promo Codes & F2P
In Russia and the CIS, Lineage 2 Main is distributed by Innova through the 4Game platform (ru.4game.ru/lineage2). Innova has worked with Lineage 2 since the mid-2000s and remains NCSoft's main partner for the post-Soviet market. In Europe it's the same publisher under the 4Game EU brand (eu.4game.com/lineage2).
The access model is Free-to-Play: you can download the client and start playing for free. Monetization runs through the in-game shop: cosmetics, consumables and boost items. The in-game currencies are L-Coins and Ncoins.
Promo codes for Lineage 2 Main are released regularly around major events: anniversaries, holidays, collaborations and updates. They are redeemed through your 4Game account or the game client. Current codes are posted on the publisher's official social channels and on dedicated fan resources. The New Year 2026 promo codes were available from December 31, 2025 to January 14, 2026.
You can grab the client via the Lineage 2 client download guide.
System Requirements
Main is the most demanding of the Lineage 2 versions. Current builds with modern zones and effects run noticeably heavier than Classic or Legacy.
| Spec | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 7 / 8 / 10 | Windows 10 / 11 |
| CPU | Intel Core 2 Duo 6300 | Intel Core i7 920 or higher |
| RAM | 4 GB | 8 GB or more |
| GPU | GeForce 7600 GT / Radeon X1800 | GeForce GTX 960 / Radeon RX 470 or higher |
| Disk space | 30 GB or more | |
| Internet | Broadband connection | |
For comfortable endgame content with many players on screen (sieges, epic raids), aim for the recommended specs or higher: CPU load spikes sharply in dense PvP scenes.
Who It's For & Criticism
Main suits players who:
- want to play current Lineage 2 with full content rather than a retro version;
- are ready for long-term leveling and investing time in clan endgame;
- value PvP โ sieges, the Olympiad and clan wars;
- aren't put off by a steep learning curve in endgame mechanics.
The main complaints from the audience:
- Endgame monetization. Free entry doesn't mean a free path to the top. At high levels the gap between paying and non-paying players is noticeable โ a hallmark of most modern Asian F2P MMORPGs.
- Barrier to entry. After many years of updates, Main has accumulated a huge number of systems, and a newcomer struggles to make sense of them without guides.
- Server activity. In Russia after 2022, part of the Main audience shifted toward Classic and other servers; peak servers still have activity, but the "golden years" of 2008-2012 are gone.
- Comparison with Classic. Some players feel NCSoft "spoiled" the main game by stacking mechanic on mechanic. Classic and Legacy appeared precisely as an answer to that demand.
Despite the criticism, Main remains a living product with regular updates: NCSoft ran an event program in spring 2026, and summer 2025 brought a major update with the new Wolf Waker class and the epic boss Chaotic Golem.
