TL;DR: Lineage 2 Interlude (C6) is the most popular chronicle in L2 history. It introduced subclasses, Noblesse, the Olympiad and the Frintezza raid, while stopping short of the Throne expansions (no Kamael, no attribute system). It is light on hardware, mature on the server side, and remains the default choice for classic L2 in 2026.

What Is Interlude

Lineage 2 Interlude is the sixth chronicle of the series, labeled C6. It launched in Korea on December 13, 2006, and reached Russia and Europe in 2007. It is the final chronicle in the Chaotic Chronicle line, following Prelude, C1, C2, C3, C4 and C5 (Oath of Blood). After Interlude, NCSoft moved on to the "Chaotic Throne" expansions, starting with The Kamael.

The name "Interlude" describes the chronicle perfectly: a transitional pause between the old era and the new one. Ironically, that "pause" became the starting point for the entire community-server culture. When players say "real Lineage 2," they almost always mean Interlude.

Key C6 Features

C6 did not just stack content on top of C5 โ€” it closed gaps players had felt since the earliest years of the game.

Subclass System

Subclasses are the headline feature that reshaped long-term progression. A character of level 75+ can pick up an additional class, level it to 75, and gain access to the skills of another specialization. A fighter could take a mage subclass; an archer could take a necromancer. There are 31 subclasses to choose from.

The mechanic is broken down in detail in our subclass system guide.

Noblesse & Olympiad

Noblesse is a status that unlocks the Olympiad and a set of privileges (stronger buffs, teleports). You can only earn it through a quest after leveling a subclass to 75. This created a long-term goal for any serious character: not just maxing your main class, but finishing a subclass too.

The Olympiad runs on top of Noblesse โ€” regular PvP tournaments that crown a monthly Hero in every class. A Hero receives a unique weapon and a visible aura seen by all players. Each Olympiad season is a genuine political race on the server. For the full breakdown, see the Noblesse system page.

Frintezza & New Raid Bosses

Frintezza is an instanced raid for 2-100 players (command channel) with a minimum level of 80. The Nornil's Castle has three stages: two sub-bosses (Scarlet van Halisha x2) and Frintezza herself with scripted phases. The reward is one of the most valuable epic jewels in the game, on par with Core/Orfen. Frintezza did not exist before C6.

Interlude's epic bosses include Antharas, Valakas, Baium, Zaken, Queen Ant, Core, Orfen and Frintezza. Clans wage full-scale wars over the epic jewels they drop.

Primeval Isle & Dimensional Rift

Primeval Isle is a high-level zone of dinosaurs (level 75+) that added a new farming economy. Dimensional Rift is a small-group instance with fast, rotating content. Both zones gave farmers an alternative to the classic catacombs.

Seven Signs & Catacombs/Necropolises

The Seven Signs system splits the server into two camps every two weeks. The winning camp gains access to catacombs and necropolises with better farming conditions. This was the first mechanic in Lineage 2 where the outcome of biweekly PvP directly shaped the server economy.

What Interlude Does Not Have

Interlude stops right before the Throne expansions: no Kamael race, no attribute system (Fire/Water/Earth/Wind), no Grace lands, no Goddess of Destruction class rework. This is by design โ€” the game's complexity is not inflated by mechanics for their own sake.

Classes, Races, PvP

Interlude has 5 races: Humans, Elves, Dark Elves, Orcs and Dwarves. Each race offers several starter classes with two later transfers (the first around level 20, the second around 40). That adds up to roughly 36 final classes (3rd class). The archetypes: tanks, healers, buffers, melee DDs (warrior/rogue), ranged DDs (archer), mages (mage/necro/warlock) and support (spoiler/crafter).

For more on classes and races, see the Lineage 2 hub.

PvP & Sieges

PvP in Interlude works on three levels:

  • Open world: a PK system with karma; killing without declaring war earns karma and a risk of dropping gear on death.
  • Clan wars: alliances declare war, after which PvP between them is penalty-free.
  • Castle sieges: every two weeks clans storm 9 castles. The castle owner collects a tax from players in the zone, funding the clan.

The Olympiad adds a fourth dimension โ€” a personal PvP ranking with a material reward (the Hero weapon). On most Interlude game worlds, it is sieges and the Olympiad that drive server politics.

Interlude Servers

Across the 2025-2026 top listings โ€” L2TopZone, L2.Hopzone, L2ELO โ€” Interlude consistently leads in the number of new servers. Dozens of projects launch every month, from x1 hardcore to x1000+ PvP festivals.

Why Interlude specifically, rather than, say, High Five or Classic?

  • Content maturity. All the key systems are in place (Noblesse, Olympiad, sieges, 8 epic bosses), but without the post-patch mechanic overload (attributes, the Awakening system, autohunt).
  • Nostalgia. The 20-35 age generation spent years on Interlude in internet cafes. This is "the game itself," no quotation marks needed.
  • Server ecosystem. The source projects (L2J, Lucera, aCis, Mobius) for Interlude are the most mature โ€” fewest bugs, most customization. Launching a stable server is easier than on later chronicles.
  • Transparent gameplay. A new player can grasp the mechanics in one evening and start competing. On Main that takes weeks.

Client & System Requirements

The Interlude client is one of the lightest among MMORPGs still in active use. A clean client weighs 4-5 GB (depending on the source and whether HD textures are bundled). It launches through the NCSoft system files (L2.exe) or a custom server launcher.

SpecMinimumRecommended
OSWindows XP / 7Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit)
CPUIntel Pentium 4 / 1 GHzIntel Core i3 or higher
RAM512 MB2 GB or more
GPU64 MB VRAM (GeForce 3+)256 MB VRAM / integrated Intel HD
Disk space5 GB6-7 GB (with patch packs)
Internet56 Kbps (dial-up)1 Mbps or more

On a 2015 laptop with integrated Intel HD 4000, the client starts and runs at 30+ FPS on medium settings. For comparison, the current version of Lineage 2 Main needs a GTX 1060+ class GPU.

It is best to download a clean client from the specific server's website or through an official archive โ€” this guarantees compatibility with the server's patch level. For more, see the client download guide.

Caveats & Criticism

Interlude is not a perfect chronicle โ€” just the best-balanced one that still exists as a living ecosystem.

  • Class balance. Archers (especially HE/SR) dominate PvP when a server is poorly tuned. Competent admins add a custom nerf or a cap on buff slots. On stock setups, treat it as a given.
  • Buffer dependency. Without a Prophet/SE/EE in the party, farming loses 30-50% of its efficiency. Solo progression is slow โ€” that is intentional design, but it can be a barrier for new players.
  • Server quality varies wildly. Behind every "top-1 Interlude 2026" is either a mature project with a track record or a fly-by-night server that closes in three months after pocketing the donations. Check a server's history on the forums.
  • Dated engine. Unreal Engine 2 with custom modifications. The physics, shadows and lighting are 2003-era. Some players see this as atmosphere, others as an obstacle.
  • No official support. NCSoft switched its official servers to Essence/Main/Classic. Interlude survives only as a community chronicle.

Compared with neighboring chronicles: High Five is richer in content, Classic is harsher and slower, and Main is more modern visually. Interlude is the point where all of the above meets in a tangible equilibrium.
