Is there a new Lineage 2 on a modern engine?
Short answer: yes — but not from NCSoft.
Searches like "new Lineage 2", "Lineage 2 on Unreal Engine 5", "L2 remastered" and "Lineage 2 new engine" all lead to one project: Lu4. It is an independent build by the MasterWork and E-Global teams that moves Lineage 2-style gameplay off the twenty-year-old Unreal Engine 2 and onto a modern Unreal Engine 5 client. NCSoft, the rights holder, has never shipped such a port itself.
Below we cover it in order: why the original engine never changed, what Lu4 actually is, and how it differs from the mobile spin-offs.
Why official Lineage 2 still runs on an old engine
The original Lineage 2 launched in 2003 on Unreal Engine 2 — modern tech for its time. The catch: NCSoft never replaced it. Across years of updates, chronicles and expansions, the game kept the same technical base — tweaked, but fundamentally unchanged.
The dated look of classic L2 is not a bug or an accident. It is a deliberate (or forced) technical choice. Migrating a live online game to a new engine is a massive, expensive undertaking. NCSoft released licensed mobile titles (Lineage 2M, Lineage 2: Revolution), but a PC client on UE4 or UE5 never appeared.
That is why the query "lineage 2 ue5" returns no official product — there isn't one. What players are actually looking for under that search is Lu4.
The "new Lineage 2" is the Lu4 project
Lu4 (official site — lu4.org, full name Liberta Ultimata 4) is an independent MMORPG built by MasterWork (MW) and E-Global. Technically it is what the community had been asking for: High Five-era gameplay with classic PvP, castle sieges and the Olympiad — running on Unreal Engine 5 with Lumen (lighting) and Nanite (geometry detail).
The first UE5 client Alpha was announced for June 12. MasterWork servers are already live, with peak populations around 6,000–7,000 players.
Lu4 is an unofficial project, not affiliated with NCSoft. For the PC community it has effectively become "the new Lineage 2 on a modern engine".

What about mobile — Lineage 2M and Revolution?
Two large mobile titles carry the Lineage 2 brand: Lineage 2M and Lineage 2: Revolution. Both are licensed by NCSoft, but they are standalone mobile games — not a port of the classic PC client to a new engine.
Lineage 2M is a 2019 Korean mobile MMORPG on Unreal Engine 4. Revolution (by Netmarble, 2016) is older still. If you are looking specifically for a PC version of Lineage 2 with modern graphics, these are not it. The mobile projects solve a different problem on a different platform.
Classic is alive too
The engine is not everyone's priority. A large part of the audience values gameplay, balance and stability above all. For players who want that old-school RPG atmosphere without betting on visuals, there are standalone projects with years of history — for example Scryde. It is not Lineage 2: it is a standalone MMORPG project with 11+ years of stable operation and its own team. We mention it as an option for those who care more about gameplay than a new engine.
