TL;DR: You earn XP by killing mobs and finishing quests; the amount scales with mob level, server rates and party size. Group up for the bonus, run Pailaka quests for instant levels, and keep Noblesse Blessing active so death doesn't cost you 4% of your XP.

Overview

You earn experience (XP) for killing mobs and completing quests. The amount depends on the mob's level, the server's XP rate and your party size. XP is the foundation of character progression. The level cap on most L2-style servers is 80 or 85.

XP Sources

Mobs are the main source. XP scales with the level gap: mobs 5+ levels below you give significantly less, while mobs above your level grant a bonus. Quests award fixed XP on completion. Pailaka quests are especially worth it โ€” they hand you 2โ€“4 levels of XP at once. Raid Bosses (RB) drop a large one-time reward, but you'll need a party.

Party: XP is split between members, but you gain a 10% bonus for each extra member (up to 20%). In a full 9-player party each person earns less than soloing, yet overall farming speed is far higher. Server rates multiply the base XP: X2 doubles your leveling speed, X50 multiplies it by 50.

Death Penalty

On death you lose 4% of the current level's XP. At high levels (78+) that 4% can mean hours of farming, so keep Noblesse Blessing active at all times.

SP (Skill Points)

SP accrues alongside XP. Spend it learning skills from your Class Master. Up to level 60 SP is usually plenty, but after that a shortage kicks in โ€” skills get more expensive while SP accrues slower. Farm mobs at your level or slightly above; they yield more SP. On high-rate servers (X50+) SP is granted proportionally, so the shortage is far less noticeable.
